This episode first aired 30 April 2018.
Left a review or rating for the podcast? Be sure to take a screen shot
and email it to my assistant at brian@briankeanefitness.com or
gary@briankeanefitness.com for a really cool bonus.

For this one, I just pressed record and talked about of my experience
running 250km self-sufficient through the Sahara Desert the week
before last. I go briefly into everything I did with my training, food
and mindset before the event and then all the ridiculous and life-
changing moments during and after my time in the Sahara. This
episode goes through the highs and the lows. I’ve talked everything
from avoiding snakes and scorpions on the long day (86 km), seeing
people hooked up to IV’s and puking blood to cutting away the steel
poles holding our tent to try and survive a sandstorm (side note: I’ll
never take having a roof and four walls for granted ever again!). I
hope you enjoy this one. This episode is dedicated to my MDS tent
mates Simon, Johnny, Paddy, Hugh, Fergal and Pete who all played a
huge role in helping me get to the finish line.

Orla qualified as a Dietitian from Kings College London. She initially obtained an honours degree in Physiology from Trinity College, allowing her to apply her detailed knowledge of the human body to the nutritional management of conditions and diseases. Since then Orla upgraded her BA in Physiology to an MA in Physiology and went on to achieve a Masters in Clinical Nutrition at Roehampton University, London.

She is one of my ‘go to’ people when it comes to the latest research on topics and I love her ability to argues the pros and cons for nearly any dietary approach. If you struggle with weight or fat loss, are confused about metabolism and how to actually boost it or most importantly, you suffer from PCOS then this is a must listen.

The first half of today’s episode is about weight loss and nutritional or dietary misconceptions and the second half of this podcast is a PCOS deep dive

Here are some of the things we talked about in today’s show.

·      Genetics and hunger

·      Optimal protein vs adequate program with a weight loss goal

·      Losing muscle as we age (and how to avoid it) and why it slows down fat burning

·      The biggest weight loss struggles she sees

·      PCOS deep dive – whose at risk, the solutions and what the research is telling us.

·      And more.

Today’s episode focuses heavily on the mindset side of things. It’s
been three months since I ran through the Arctic and just over a year
since I ran six back to back marathons in the Sahara Desert. Both of
those challenges thought me so much about how to be in other areas
of my life. My personal relationships, my business, and my happiness
levels are the best they’ve ever been and I put nearly all of it down to
the 10 lessons I’ve learned below so I wanted to share them. This is
another ‘press record and talk’ video so I hope you enjoy it.
1.You need to break big goals into smaller parts
2.Pain is temporary and it will go away
3.You need to build the mental strength slowly every day
4.All limitations are self-created
5.Your own worst enemy lives between your two ears

6.You can’t do things for other people, it needs to be for you and
you alone
7.People put what you do on a pedestal and they shouldn’t!
8.If you fail to prepare. Prepare to fail.
9.You can’t give yourself the option to quit or you will take it!
10.See it, believe it, achieve. Become who you need to be, act
like that and wait for reality to catch up.

Blessing is an Irish Nigerian IFBB Pro Bodybuilder and 2X Arnold Champion.

His Instagram page has over 1.8 million followers.

Interestingly enough, a good portion of his more than 1.8 million followers have become fans of his without knowing about his bodybuilding endeavors.

Instead, he has gotten a following from his hilarious gym sketches and great sense of humor.

Blessing hopes to change some of the stigma around bodybuilders being too serious and aggressive. And as someone who has known him for years, I can definitely say that he’s doing that video by video and post by post.

An incredibly motivational and inspiring conversation with a wonderful person who I’ve known for years. Enjoy.

  • His incredible backstory of being smuggled from Nigeria to Ireland at 9 years old
  • Growing up in Mayo and joining the gym to help defend himself
  • Finding his passion in bodybuilding and his advice for dealing with those who don’t believe in your dream
  • How gratitude is a belief system, not just something we do
  • The crazy virality of his video content online and growing to over 1 million followers in six months!
  • His Pro Bodybuilding debut that leads to a short bout of depression and how it’s become his favorite failure “no losing, only learning”
  • And much more.

Today’s solo episode is based on feedback from a few recent
episodes on building mental strength and getting sh*t done whether
you feel like it or not.
I hope it helps.
“We don’t decide our future, we decide our habits and our habits
decide our future”
1. Pursue your passion (either in work or personal life or both)
2. Start a gratitude journal (rewire your brain)
3. Become your own best friend (don’t let your biggest enemy live
between your two ears)
4. Get more sleep (or higher quality sleep)
5. Disconnect from technology (one day a week digital detox)
6. Spend time with a good book, meditate or exercise (switch your

Mathew Fraser is the 5X Fittest Man on Earth: the most successful and dominant CrossFit athlete in history, a 5-time CrossFit Games Champion (2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 & 2020) and the only 6 time individual podium finisher. Prior to his CrossFit career, Fraser was also the 2009 Junior National Champion Weightlifter and son of Olympic athletes.

Mat’s journey to success is characterized by adversity, including fighting his way back to fitness after breaking his back in a training accident aged 19. Mat now shares his fitness secrets and insights across social media to a following of 2.4 million avid fans and Instagram followers.

He is also the author of the book and national best seller Hard Work Pays Off (HWPO) Train. Eat. Sleep. Repeat which we discuss in today’s episode.

This is an incredibly inspirational podcast and one I will listen back to regularly when I need a dose of motivation. This is up with there with one of my favorite ever episodes; so I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed recording it.

Here are some of the things we talked about in today’s show:

·      How and why, he ended up in Crossfit

·       “To endure really means one thing to me – sacrificing a moment of pain for a lifetime of freedom” – why you need to choose your suffering.

·      His relationship with failure and using it as feedback to improve

·      The f*ck you mentality and using ‘bad motivators” the ones you “shouldn’t’” have to fuel you (but how it only gets you so far before it becomes destructive)

·      Turning your weaknesses into your biggest strengths

·      The reason you need to have a ‘big why’

·      The launch of the app and future of HWPO.

·      And much more

Today’s podcast is another solo ‘press record and talk’ episode.

I often make notes on my phone that remind me of the things I need to stay focused on. These are the ones I’ve been using for the past several months so I wanted to share them today (alongside some stories to go alongside each). I hope it helps.

  1.   Happiness is never owned, only rented and that rent is due every day (dealing with anxiety)  03:07

  1.   If you’re not happy with a coffee, you won’t be happy with a boat (don’t wish to have more, wish to desire less) 12:18

  1.   That what you most need is where you least want to look (insecurity and self-worth) 24:19

  1.   Don’t ask a fish who discovered water i.e. if you are too close to a situation, you can’t see it for what it really is. 31:57

  1.   It’s not what happens to you, it’s how you react that counts (dealing with sh*t times) 41:34

  1.   There are no bad days just character building days (reframing negative into positive) 52:38

  1.   Avoid sunk costs (what would you do right now if you didn’t think how much effort, time or money you put into something) 58:52
