Rashad is a former UFC Light Heavy Weight Champion and UFC Hall of Famer.

Rashad knows a thing or two about the connection between mind and body, and the importance of having both in sync. He credits mushrooms for that one-two punch of focus + energy in training and competition, and then easing the transition from fighter to “just getting back to being me.”

He is passionate about transforming sports nutrition and transforming access to education so that others can have the same opportunities that he did.

Sports injuries and the lasting mental damage caused as a result can impact athletes for decades even after they’ve left the game. This is especially true in high contact sports like football and mixed martial arts. The conversation is now turning towards functional mushrooms and the health benefits they could be holding when it comes to supporting injured players.

Here are some of the things we talked about in today’s podcast

  • The evolution in sports nutrition with functional mushrooms
  • Micro dosing psilocybin
  • Spiritual dosages of psilocybin and the profound impacts it had on Rashad’s life
  • The most underrated functional mushrooms (for gut health and recovery)
  • And much more

I’m the process of writing my third book centred around mindset so  I’ve jumped all over the place today.
I’ve gone off on a million tangents but I know these episodes normally go down very well as
I’m just thinking out loud for most of it.
I hope you enjoy it.

My second book about sports nutrition and strength and
conditioning for GAA players (titled: GAA: Leaner, Stronger, Faster)
will out before Xmas.

Even though these are the three questions, I’ve jumped around with topics such as mental health vs. mental illness; journaling to ease self induced anxiety and stories from my early bodybuilding days, my fear of running through the desert and my own crippling issues with
self-sabotage over the years.

As a non-runner, how do you motivate yourself to put in the miles
08:03

Did you spend large amounts of time reading about fitness, the body, mindset etc.?

You’re very knowledgeable and I wondered how you did it?  28:02

I listened to your podcast on how to deal with negative
people…before I say anything else- it was amazing!!  However, I have
one huge issue- I think I’m that negative person to myself! HELP!

This was a difficult episode to record and I talk about some of my
own issues that I haven’t talked to previously.
I’ve had my own issues with mental health and your mess becomes
your message so here’s to hovering over the ‘publish’ button for
several minutes.

“Depression is about what has happened, anxiety is about what
could happen”

Do you have a mental health issue or an ‘ I have too many negative

people on my life’ issue?
Control the controllable (exercise, meditation, mindfulness, yoga etc.)
What’s causing your issues?

“Smart people have great answers, Geniuses have great questions!”

Stay on top of it.

“Tell me what you do every day and I’ll tell you where you’ll be in a
year.”

Make of list of what makes you happy and unhappy – it’s that simple.
Don’t be a f**ing victim anymore!

“If you do what is easy and your life will be hard, if do what is hard
and your life will be easy.”

Mental health is an advantage if you choose to see it that way.
There’s nothing you can call me that I haven’t already called myself
already (and ten times worse).
Become stronger and it becomes your superpower!

This is one of those ‘press record and talk’ style episodes so I hope you enjoy it.

Episode 1 of this podcast came out on September 10th 2016 – The Things You Need To Do For Fat Loss and I’ve changed my mind about a lot of things over that six year period.

Charlie Munger has a great line in his book ‘Poor Charlie’s Almanac’ that you should always be willing to give up your best loved ideas. Today’s podcast goes through the eight biggest things I’ve changed my mind about since starting the show in 2016.

  1. My opinions on ‘the best diet’ 06:06
  2. Anxiety. As it’s not a major focus in my life now, it just doesn’t take up the same mental real estate 14:22
  3. I get less inspired by people who have done incredible things (and more inspired by everyday transformations - physical or mental) 26:18
  4. My bullsh*t detector is much better now 32:35
  5. Not preaching what works for me without all the context of whose receiving the advice  38:42
  6. Recommending books is nearly impossible now (hence why I talk to the authors so you can make up your own mind)  50:17
  7. I’m less of a fan of supplements than I was when I started the podcast 55:48
  8. My body goals (and life goals) are completely different from when I started so my priorities are equally different 01:02:10

This was a press record and talk episode. I’ve talked about my
experiences in dealing with negative people over the last ten years.
Parts of this episode are very raw and I’ve used some stories from my
personal life that I haven’t talked about before so I hope it helps.

Notable timestamps:

Ask yourself, who am I spending most of my time with? 05:34

“You’re the average of the five people you spend the most time with”
– Jim Rohn

If you can’t cut people because they’re family or in your workplace,
you need to give their words less weight! 14:36

“If you wouldn’t switch positions with someone, why are you
listening to them?”

There are three types of people in this world, people who give you
energy, people who drain your energy and those who are neutral.
Who are the emotional vampires in your immediate environment?

“Somebody projecting hate or negativity on you is normally a

reflection of what’s going on in their life. That’s on them, not you!
Remember hurt people hurt people”

Are they just projecting onto you? 36:49

“There’s always someone smarter, leaner, bigger. There’s always a
bigger d*ck!” 43:10

For this one, I just pressed record and talked about of my experience
running 250km self-sufficient through the Sahara Desert the week
before last. I go briefly into everything I did with my training, food
and mindset before the event and then all the ridiculous and life-
changing moments during and after my time in the Sahara. This
episode goes through the highs and the lows. I’ve talked everything
from avoiding snakes and scorpions on the long day (86 km), seeing
people hooked up to IV’s and puking blood to cutting away the steel
poles holding our tent to try and survive a sandstorm (side note: I’ll
never take having a roof and four walls for granted ever again!). I
hope you enjoy this one. This episode is dedicated to my MDS tent
mates Simon, Johnny, Paddy, Hugh, Fergal and Pete who all played a
huge role in helping me get to the finish line.
