Glenn Livingston Ph.D is a veteran psychologist who become disillusioned by what traditional psychology had to offer overweight and/or food obsessed individuals and spent several decades researching the nature of bingeing and overeating via work with his own patients AND a self-funded research program with more than 40,000 participants.

Most important, however, was his own personal journey out of obesity and food prison to a normal, healthy weight and a much more light-hearted relationship with food.

He is the author of the book Never Binge Again  which goes through How Thousands of People Have Stopped Overeating and Binge Eating - and Stuck to the Diet of Their Choice! (By Reprogramming Themselves to Think Differently About Food.)

This was an interesting conversation around binge eating. Glenn has a very different approach to the mindset around food and today’s episode will give you some new tools to potentially support overrating and binging. Like every podcast interview I do, take what’s relevant to you, experiment with it yourself and see if it helps.

Here are some of the things we talked about in today’s episode:

  • Glenn’s personal history with his weight and what lead him to studying binge eating disorders and disordered eating.

  • The reasons overeating, stress eating, and binge eating so prevalent in our culture today.
  • The difference between binge eating for obese and overweight individuals vs the fitness population and ‘binge/restrict’ cycles

  • Dissecting your cravings - chocolate binges vs salty binges vs other cravings

  • Successfully identifying the triggers and conditions that precede a binge

  • Practical tips and techniques to hijack your reptilian brain when you get a craving binge.

  • Glenn’s 4 categories of rules when it comes to food: Always, Nevers, Conditionals, and Unrestricted.
  • How it’s  possible to “Never Binge Again?” by applying the psychology of winners to eating.

Dr. Stacy is an applied researcher, innovator, and entrepreneur in human performance, specifically sex differences in training, nutrition, and environmental conditions.

Prior to being launched into industry, she served as an exercise physiologist and nutrition scientist at Stanford University from 2007 to 2012, where she specialized in sex differences with environmental and nutritional considerations for recovery and performance, specializing in women's health and performance.

With the unique opportunities, Silicon Valley has to offer, during her tenure at Stanford, she had the opportunity to translate earlier research into a science-based layperson's book (ROAR) written to explain sex differences in training and nutrition across the lifespan.

Her contributions to the international research environment has led to her being named:

  •     One of the top 50 visionaries of the running industry (2015) by DMSE Sports.
  •     One of the top 40 women changing the paradigm of her field (2017) by Outside Magazine.
  •     One of the top four individuals changing the landscape in triathlon nutrition (2017) by Triathlete Magazine

And all her research publication history can be found in Google Scholar. This was a fascinating conversation. I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed recording it.

Here are some of the things we talked about in today’s podcast.

  •     The major training and nutrition sex differences between men and women
  •     Intermittent fasting for females (how to minimise the downsides) and why it's completely different for men.
  •     The biggest fitness industry misconceptions you need to watch out for
  •     What a natural/normal menstrual cycle should look like
  •     The contraceptive conundrum: is the pill blunting your training gains?
  •     Sleep and its importance on mood and recovery
  •     The benefits of cold-water immersion for females and how it differs for males.
  •     And much more

Dr Misak goes pretty on the science in this episode, but I’ve tried to break it down as we go along (where possible):

Here are some of the things we talked about:

  •     How to check in what your body needs (and what foods or supplements to use with it)
  •     The missed symptoms of your body breaking down gradually
  •     Food intolerance and how all tests are NOT created equal
  •     The things to look out for when detoxifying your body
